Catalogue Note
RARE. THE BOIES PENROSE COPY. Pedro Teixeira (1563-1645?) was a celebrated Portuguese soldier, merchant, traveller, and writer, who made a life study of Oriental history. In the preface we are told that this work was drafted in Portuguese, but was written and published in Spanish to attract a wider readership. The first part of the work is a history of Persia and its monarchy based on and largely translated from the Persian chronicle of the noted fifteenth century historian Mir Khavand (see E.G. Browne History of Persian Literature iii, pp.432-433). The second part is an account of the rulers of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, and the third part (p.47) contains a fascinating account of Teixeira's travels in the Far and Middle East. In 1600 he had undertaken a voyage from Malacca to Portugal via the Philippines, China, Japan and Mexico. He was back in the Far East in 1603 but having tired of long voyages by sea Teixeira decided to make his return trip by land as far as possible. This time his route took him from Goa to Hormuz, Basra, Baghdad, Aleppo, Iskenderum, Cyprus and Zante, arriving in Venice in about 1605, and ultimately in Antwerp where he produced and published this volume.
