Catalogue Note
AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. This volume was owned and probably compiled by Colonel David Smiley (1916-2009) a British special forces and intelligence officer, whose signature appears at the front of the book, and who was one of Oman's most famous military commanders, leading a successful counter insurgency during the 1950s (Smiley defeated the Nizwa rebellion, and safeguarded the Strait of Hormuz). A later owner was Colonel Ray Nightingale who was a member of the Oman Intelligence Service/Research Department from 1971-74. This volume is made up of parts of Lorimer's Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf that relate to Oman, and have been arranged alphabetically by place. Lorimer's Gazetteer was originally a confidential British Military Intelligence handbook, and an important source of information concerning Arabia.
