Catalogue Note
Finati travelled extensively in the Middle East, often acting as guide and translator to European explorers in the region. As a young man, he enlisted in the service of Mahomet Ali and took part in the capture of Makkah and Al Madinah. Bankes, the editor of this edition, travelled with Finati to Upper Egypt, Nubia, Syria and Palestine between 1815 and 1818. He also visited Syria with Buckingham, and was great friends with Hobhouse and Byron.
The Narrative includes sections on Makkah and Al Madinah, the Yemen, Jerusalem, Cyprus, Petra, Palmyra and Cairo, together with an eye-witness account of the massacre of the Mamelukes by Mahomet Ali.
