Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Catalogue Note

The collation of this work presents considerable problems due to the fact that "in order to render [it] more generally interesting, the several views will be published in a detached or promiscuous way, just as finished by the respective artists, which will enable the purchasers to arrange them as they judge best" (preface). The number of plates in copies varies. Although BAL RIBA suggests a total of 250 plates and maps, its own copy was lacking at least 20 of them, and the 244 in this copy accords with some others offered at auction in recent years in contemporary or near contemporary bindings.
