Condition

Overall in very good condition. The gilt bronze surfaces throughout retain a rich patina, showing gentle rubbing at the immediate edges and to the high points of the figures. With light surface soiling to some of the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and gentle use. The bronze surfaces with a few small and minor areas of discoloration that appear consistent with age and use. The lid of the chest/inkwell inset with eight inset stones of red, blue, amber and green color which all appear original and undisturbed. One minor area of surface dirt and minor oxidation near the green inset stone and visible in the catalogue illustration. The interior of the inkwell with some light surface scratches, minor discolorations and traces of surface soiling consistent with age and gentle use. The interior period clear glass inkwell with some minor air bubbles, surface scratches and edge chips not visible once the inserted in the inkwell. A dynamic example of the model depicting three nudes pulling an ornate octagonal chest to shore from the unseen depths of the ocean. The inkstand presents a vibrant narrative composition focused on movement and texture in the figures that are skillfully rendered in luminous gilt bronze accented by the richly colored inset stones. -----
