Description

the handle modelled as a cooper wearing a green hat, iron-red frock coat, brown apron and puce stockings, the moulded body painted with sprays of cut flowers between iron-red and silvered bands, within trellis and foliate borders,

Condition

Minor wear to enamels and to silvered bands.

Catalogue Note

Only eight other examples of tankards with human-form handles are recorded. Two are illustrated by Elisabeth Sturm-Bednarczyk, Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, Wiener Porrzellan der Frühzeit, p. 132, nos. 151 and 152, both of which are now in the Museo Civico, Turin. One is painted with kakiemon flower sprays, the other with deutsche Blumen. Another example, also with kakiemon flowers, whose whereabouts is currently unknown, is illustrated by J. Folnesics, Die Wiener-Porzellan Karl Mayer, 1928, pl. 3, no. 37. An example painted with a schwarzlot landscape is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and is illustrated by J.F. Hayward, Viennese porcelain of the Du Paquier Period, 1952, pl. 44d. A fifth example, painted in schwarzlot and gilding with a landscape and ruins, and with a female figural handle, was in the Nordböhmisches Gewerbemuseum, Reichenberg, and is illustrated by J.Folnesics and Dr. E.W. Braun, Geschichte der K.K. Wiener Porzellan-Manufaktur, pl. VI, no. 5. Another, painted with a cavalry procession, in the Untermeyer Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is illustrated by Y.Hackenbroch, Meissen and other Continental Porcelain, Faience and Enamel in the Irwin Untermeyer Collection, 1956, pl. 98, fig. 157. A tankard, form the Melinda an Paul Sullivan Collection is illustrated in Fired by Passion, Vienna Baroque Porcelain of Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, 2009, cat. no. 162, fig. 8.51, p. 1258. Another example was sold by Sotheby's, New York, 21st May, 2004, lot 231.
