Condition
Overall the condition of the terracotta busts is good with dirt and wear to the surfaces consistent with age. There are various minor chips and abrasions to the edges, including small losses to the headdresses and drapery. Some of the edges of the drapery may be restored; it is possible that there may be restoration to the noses. There is noticeable wear to the socle of the bust which turns to the sinister; part of the moulding at the front is lost and the surface appears rough and dry throughout. There is a thin layer of slip to the surfaces of each of the busts, which may potentially conceal condition issues. There are numerous very small lacunae and a few minor stable firing cracks. There are various reminants of an old dark paint layer to the surfaces. There are some pencil marks.

Catalogue Note
Le buste de la femme à la voilette pourrait être celui de Catherine de Médicis. Les traits du visage, avec une petite bouche étroite aux commissures prononcées et des grands yeux aux paupières marquées, rappellent le travail du lorrain Jacob-Sigisbert Adam, père de la célèbre dynastie de sculpteurs, dont Sigisbert-Lambert et Nicolas-Sébastien, et grand-père de Clodion. En 1699, il entra au service du duc Léopold de Lorraine et participa aux décors de son château de Lunéville. Il fut également l'auteur de nombre de statuettes et de bustes en terre cuite, généralement de trois quart et avec un sens marqué du réalisme.
