Condition

Very good condition overall, with some minor surface dirt in the crevices. St Peter's hands appear both to have been replaced with the fingers of his proper right hand restored. The face, hair and drapery finely carved. A few fine vertical fissures visible to the drapery, with a few minor lacks to the lower edges of the base. A custom's stamp underneath the sculpture indicating: National Revenue CANADA custom - douane accis 24.6.1942 MONTREAL, and an old collection label n° 24 to the back.

Le traitement du visage avec ce nez pointu, les cheveux bouclés et la barbe finement modelée, le déhanchement du corps 'en contraposto', créant des plis triangulaires profonds de sa robe, ainsi que le choix du bois de chêne, localisent cette figure dans la Basse-Rhénanie dans l'entourage d'artistes comme Henrick Douverman et Henrick van Holt, tous deux actifs à Clèves, vers 1500.
