Condition
Very good condition overall with minor surface dirt in the crevices consistent with age and handling. One of the bone mouldings from the cover is lacking. A few minor pieces missing, with one bone element missing to the left rear corner. There appears to be a small old restoration to the lower left front corner. The tinted green lining elements may have been refreshed. The finial may have been detached at one time. Metal lock plate is missing inside the casket. The feet may be later replacements. The inside of the casket is inlaid with colored paper from a later period. Very fine marquetery casket in very good condition which can be highly recommended.

L'atelier florissant fondé à la toute fin du XIVe siècle par Baldassare degli Embriachi, s'illustra dans la production d'oeuvres et d'objets usuels en marqueterie de bois et reliefs sculptés en ivoire ou en os. Le coffret de mariage offrait un support narratif idéal pour des sujets mythologiques, bibliques ou classiques décomposés en plusieurs scènes.
Sur le couvercle, deux créatures fantastiques ailées présentent des écussons qui étaient probablement destinés à être gravés des armes des époux. Un coffret similaire a été vendu par Sotheby's New York le 8 juin 2006, lot 406.
