Catalogue Note
This miniature, together with a series of similar works which appear to be by the same artist, is unusual in that it is painted directly onto unprepared paper with no use of heavy body-colour. For closely related works in the National Museum, New Delhi, see Brussels 1974, p.26, no.75 and pl.73, and in the Brooklyn Museum of Art, see Poster 1994, pp.219-220, no.174. For two larger and slightly earlier drawings from Sawar also on uncoloured paper, see Topsfield 2012, pp.212-217, nos.90-91.
