Catalogue Note

In recent years Professor Milo C. Beach has thoroughly reassessed early painting from the Rajasthani state of Kotah and has re-assigned many of the paintings and drawings previously attributed to the artists termed 'the Kotah Master', 'The Master of the Elephants' and others to a group of artists identified by him as Painters A, B and C, representing an evolution of master styles at the Kotah school. The present drawing would accord most closely with the style of Painter C. For a thorough discussion of this new research see Beach in Beach, Fischer and Goswamy 2011, vol.I, pp.291-304, vol.II, pp.459-478.
