- Gouache on paper
gouache heightened with gold on paper, double-sided painting set into an album leaf with margins decorated with large gold floral scrolls, verso inscribed in upper margin in black nasta'liq 'Hasan Qutb Shah'
Condition
In generally good overall condition, album leaf cropped at lower edge, small tear to upper left corner, three small pieces of mounting tape adhered to verso, as viewed.

Catalogue Note
A closely comparable double-sided painting showing Abu'l Hasan Qutb Shah on one side and a very similar maiden on the other, is in the San Diego Museum of Art (Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, see Portland 1973-74, p.158, no.132). Other small paintings of this type are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Abu'l Hasan's physical form and facial features are very distinctive and can be seen in several other portraits of him, see for example, Zebrowski 1983, p.190, fig.156; Haidar and Sardar 2015, p.245, cat.141.
