Catalogue Note

The artist Muhammad Baqir (to whom the attribution of the present work was confirmed by Basil Robinson) is best known for the border decoration of the St. Petersburg Muraqqa’, compiled between 1734 and 1759. His signature is found in twenty-five margins, seven borders around miniatures and five around calligraphic specimens (Welch et al. 1996, pp.27-9).

For other works by Muhammad Baqir, see Falk (ed.) 1985, p.131, no.104; Welch et al. p.97, col.pl.143/Folio 77 recto; Drouot Paris, 23 June 1982, lot H. 19, together with some of the borders in the folios then sold from this smaller album, now dispersed. See also Titley 1979, p.29, fig.16 (British Library, Or.4938 (25); London 1976-I, pp.86 and 158, no.63; Sotheby's, London, 6 December 1967, lot 88, and 13 April 2000, lot 43, and two paintings on lacquer, 24 April 1979, lot 392, and 26 April 1990, lot 237. There is a drawing of a completely different character, depicting a combat between a lion and a dragon, signed by Baqir, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Paris 2001, p.101, no.68).
