Catalogue Note

The calligraphic element of the present album page appears to have once been part of an album of calligraphy. The text is in Arabic and it contains the story of Sahl Ibn Harun, a writer and poet (d.858 AD) writing a book in praise of greed/avarice (bukhl) and presenting it to Hasan Ibn Sahl, the Abbasid minister to the caliph Ma'mun. This is followed by a further anecdote.
