Catalogue Note

In Orissa and South India the carving of secular standing figures in wood and ivory appeared from the eighteenth century onwards. Here the symmetrical frontal stance is clearly derived from ancient Jain stone sculptures such as the monumental Bahubali statue at Sravana Belgola in Karnataka and the rock-cut walls of the Udayagiri caves in Orissa.
