Catalogue Note

This plaque would have originally formed part of a cabinet or box much like the ivory Deccani panels in Los Angeles County Museum of Art (see Pal 1981, p.80, nos.71-72). As with the LACMA plaques the current lot provides us with an insight into courtly life. The depiction of elephants and princes hunting and hawking was a popular subject and appeared in both miniatures and other works of art from the period.
