Catalogue Note
Wajid Ali Shah (r.1847-1856) was Nawab of Oudh at a time when the power of the kings was greatly reduced in relation to the British. Indeed, in 1856 he was pensioned off and lived the rest of his life near Calcutta. He died in 1887. Despite his limited political and military power, art and culture in Oudh continued to flourish under his patronage.
