Description
- wood
the front carved and polychromed with the festive birthday celebration of the legendary Tang dynasty general Guo Ziyi, centrally seated in a grand outdoor pavilion as guests and attendants converge, the reverse with shaped panels enclosing figural landscapes and flowering plants, all on a black lacquer ground (8)
Condition
Each of the panels with some restored and consolidated splitting- two of the panels with splits running the entire length. There are chips and flaking lacquer - particularly along the edges. There has been overall restoration and overpaint to lost and lifting lacquer and pigments, particularly to the edges (where the panels are joined by hooked-hinges) and feet. A protective varnish previously applied has yellowed the surface and the earlier areas of restoration have also discolored.
