carved of striated brown agate as a neritiform mollusc shell, the hinged lid pierced with Russian inscription 'Pomni' (Memento) in blue and white opaque enamel, the lid border of gold scrolls on black enamel ground, the thumbpiece set with three rose-cut diamonds, struck with workmaster's initials, 56 standard, scratched inventory number 48650 or 48630
