Description

  • diameter 14.5cm, 5 3/4 in.
the exterior richly nielloed with allegorical figures of the four seasons on stippled ground, the gilt interior inscribed 'Ch. Chazipetros Maréchal en Gréce', apparently unmarked

Condition

Excellent condition, the niello and gilding in particularly good order. The interior of the bowl with light scratches, consistent with age and use. The rim very slightly bent at 5 o'clock.

Catalogue Note

Christodoulos Hatzipetros (1799-1869) led disparate forces against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, later serving as a Major General and aide-de-camp under Kings Otto and George I of Greece.  A Lothario by repute, he was at one point a lover of Jane Digby, Lady Ellenborough, following Ludwig I of Bavaria and preceding Sheik Abdul Medjuel el Mezrab.
