Catalogue Note

Set to music by Frédéric d'Erlanger and choreographed by Michel Fokine, Cinderella premiered at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 19 July 1938. It was a production of the Ballets Russes de Colonel W. de Basil, successor to the original company after Diaghilev's death in 1929. The cast included Tatiana Riabouchinska as Cinderella and David Lichine as the Prince. The present lot is a mise-en-scène of scene II, in which Cinderella's step-mother, step-sisters and other guests arrive at the ball at the Royal Palace.
