Catalogue Note

The Fair at Sorochyntsi is an opera by Modest Mussorgsky based on the eponymous tale by Nikolai Gogol. It was a popular opera and Goncharova is known to have worked on four separate productions between the mid-1920s and 1940. The many different stagings mean it is often difficult to attribute designs to a specific production and present difficulties with dating, particularly as she would often thriftily recycle previous unrealised designs.
