Catalogue Note

In the early 1950s Gerasimov was invited to the Mexican Embassy in Moscow to celebrate the September national holiday. He was apparently struck by the colourful patterns of the traditional Tehuana dress worn by the ambassador’s daughter Gloria and was commissioned by her father to paint her shortly afterwards. In his memoirs, Gerasimov recalls how much he enjoyed painting this portrait (A.Gerasimov, Zhizn' khudozhnika, Moscow, 1963, p.198).
