There is scattered staining throughout the composition and a light covering of surface dirt. There are a few discrete areas of minor craquelure, such as in the central figure's shirt. Some very minor areas of paint loss are visible in the shirt of the man smoking a pipe. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to the repaired tear and a few other scattered areas of minor retouching but a more conclusive analysis is prevented by the varnish layer.
