Original canvas which is buckling in places, most notably in the upper left corner. There is a small restored canvas repair in the right of the upper edge with a canvas repair patch visible from the reverse. There is scattered staining throughout the composition and a light covering of surface dirt. There are a few discrete areas of minor craquelure, such as in the central figure's shirt. Some very minor areas of paint loss are visible in the shirt of the man smoking a pipe. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to the repaired tear and a few other scattered areas of minor retouching but a more conclusive analysis is prevented by the varnish layer. Held in a black and gold painted frame. Unexamined out of frame.
