Catalogue Note

Leonid Pasternak moved to Germany in 1921 with his two daughters and remained there until the late 1930s. His portraits of contemporary writers and intellectuals are a key component of his oeuvre. It has been suggested that the sitter of the present work may be Herman Hesse.
