Catalogue Note

In December 1924 shortly before returning to Zinder, the Croisière Noire expedition stopped in Tessaoua in order to meet with the Sultan depicted in the present portrait. As Georges-Marie Haardt and Louis Audouin Dubreuil relate in their account of the trip, Barmou was so grateful at their having fixed his car that he invited them to visit his famous harem of a hundred women.

Zwirblanski was a painter and collector who owned other works by Yakovlev including the large painting in oil and tempera, The Footbridge at Archambault, offered in these rooms in June 2009.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming Alexander Yakovlev catalogue raisonné being prepared by Caroline Haardt de la Baume, who will provide a certificate of authenticity for this work
