Condition

Original canvas. There is faint craquelure in places throughout. There are a couple of minor surface scratches in the upper centre. UV light reveals a couple of minor spots of retouching in the lower right quadrant. Held in a gold-painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

The present portrait closely relates to the official photograph of the Tsesarevich that was taken in 1907. Soon after, the photograph was published as an Union postale universelle postcard which was distributed across Russia (fig.1). Throughout his career Makovsky executed various portraits of the Imperial family, including at least three portraits of Alexander II and the 1907 portrait of Maria Nikolaevna (The State Hermitage Museum).
