Catalogue Note

The tradition of Russian icon painting was a major influence on Russian avant-garde and today continues to be a source of inspiration for contemporary artists. Bread is an on-going series started in 2007 which comprises individual hand carved wooden panels imitating rye bread. Works from this series have been widely exhibited both in Russia and abroad. First at Documenta XII in Kassel, and most recently in Venice at the Parallel Convergences at the Casa dei Tre Oci in Giudecca. Despite the whimsicality of the visual play between icon panel and slice of bread the artist has created a work which is loaded with serious questions about visual culture and its value.
