Catalogue Note

John Carter II was one of the most prolific neoclassical silversmiths in London, with particular ties to America.  He stamped most of the silver service ordered by George Washington for the marriage of his stepson, John Parke Custis, as well as the column-form candlesticks acquired on their honeymoon by Arthur and Mary Middleton of South Carolina.
