Description

  • carved wood kiot, gild wood frame, gilded silver, tempera and oil on panel, velvet backing
  • 8 5/8 x 6 3/4 in. (22 x 17.2 cm) (icon alone)
the gilded silver oklad and parcel gilt robes stamped, chased, and repoussé, struck with Cyrillic initials DCh of an unrecorded master, Moscow, 1899-1908, 84 standard, contained in a carved wood kiot with gilt wood frame painted with flowers and beads in imitation of enamel work

Condition

the icon with minimal underpainting except for the hands and face, the surface with some damage from nails and the back of the oklad and with cardboard guards glued to the surface borders and in the area of the Gospels as a buffer; the right border applied with card to improve the fit of the oklad; the riza and halo separate, the halo with nails soldered to the rear surface and with some slight bending to decorative elements; the gilt wood and painted frame with rubbing to gilding and areas of loss at upper left exposing gesso, the carved wood kiot with original hardware but lacking glass
