the finely painted icon with the Archangel Gabriel greeting the Virgin Mary, the table between them with a holy book open to the prophecy of a virgin giving birth in Isaiah 7:14, the Lord Sabaoth at upper left blows the Holy Spirit shown as a dove down upon Mary, the parcel gilt oklad carefully chased and repoussé in imitation of the painting, with a border of palmettes, struck with obscured maker's mark, initials AZ of an unidentified assaymaster (Postnikova-Loseva #1161), St. Petersburg, 84 standard

Condition

the icon in very good condition, with some minimal surface cracking and discoloration to gilding, the back fitted with two splints, would probably benefit from a professional cleaning; the oklad with old silver repairs (see lower left quadrant) and with loss to gilding consistent with age
