Catalogue Note

See Schurmann, Ulrich, Caucasian Rugs, Germany, 1964, pp. 314 - 315, pl. 122, for a Daghestan rug with related field design and minor borders which are similar to the main 'stencil' style border seen in the present lot, and which Schurmann dates to the end of the 18th century.  The use of silk for the pile in the present lot is highly unusual for a Caucasian weaving.  The early date is also noteworthy.
