Description
- wool, pile
- approximately 220 by 195cm; 7ft. 3in., 6ft. 5in.
Condition
Overall measurements: 188cm across the top, 195cm across the bottom, 218cm along left side, 220cm along right side
Lustrous wool, pile with differential oxidization varying between 12mm and fully oxidized to knotheads. Some fold wear lines with re-piling. One in lower right hand quadrant, visible in catalogue photograph, running across border and into field and level with this on left hand side a re-piled fold line in outer reciprocal guard. Another again in reciprocal outer guard on left hand side approx. one third of the way down (all these can be seen in the image as slightly lighter areas of colour). Intermittent re-piling to fold line across right hand side of lower pendant of green medallion. Spot re-piling, again mainly to fold-wear, scattered in upper part of field. Ends overlocked. Some losses to side cords. Would probably benefit from a careful clean to maintain the lustre of the wool. Very nice large scale, with generous medallion and well articulated border. Lovely old weave.

Catalogue Note
A Sewan of similar field and border design can be seen published in Tschebull, R., Kazak, New York, 1971, pp. 72 – 73 and pl. 27. Whilst the two works have many similarities, the 'Maltese Cross' medallion differs; here it is straight edged as opposed to the more classic splayed shape. See Lot 2 in this sale for a Sewan with another variant of the medallion.
