Catalogue Note
The motifs on the present carpet include the Buddhist lion in the centre, and a deer (symbolising longevity), waves and rocks (possibly Penglai, the island of the immortals), a lotus flower (Buddhist symbol) and clouds (for luck). For an 18th century carpet centred with a Buddhist lion and in each corner, against a yellow ground with floral scrolls, within a similar border type to the present carpet (282 by 216cm), see Franses, Michael & Pinner, Robert, The Chinese Collection: Chinese Carpets in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Hali, Vol. 5. No.2, 1982, pp.142-148, No.2, Inv.T.103-1909. See sothebys.com for further discussion of this lot.
