Description

  • approximately 619 by 393cm; 20ft. 4in., 12ft. 11in.
with inscriptions, within the black border: a repeat of a verse from a ghazal of Hafiz; within the two pink cartouches: a couplet from a qasidah of Sa'di;  and within the two red cartouches: a Persian couplet, not fully decipherable, together with a framed copy of the magazine article illustrating the carpet in situ (2)

Purchased by the present owner's father direct from ICI in circa 1990, thence by descent 

Literature

ICI ' Millbank ' magazine, 1975,  marking the 50th anniversary of ICI and illustrating the carpet in situ in the Chairman's office in 1929 (See Fig.1)

Condition

Overall measurements: 383cm across the top, 393cm across the bottom, 616cm along left side, 619cm along right side Generally even 3mm pile overall. Lower in areas top left and right of central medallion within main field. Three small reweaves in centre area above top of main medallion. Later cerise coloured herringbone tape bound ends, lacking fringing. Original overcast sides. Some repairs to outer edges on right side. Fine weave and very good quality wool, overall a very good quality weaving. EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION OF PERSIAN/IRANIAN WORKS OF ART TO THE USA.
