Catalogue Note

The Benjamin West was shown to Ruth S. Kraemer, author of the exhibition catalogue Drawings by Benjamin West and his son, Raphael Lamar West (The Morgan Library, New York, 1975), who commented that the watermark was similar to that in other works by West and that the work is probably a study for a cameo.
