Catalogue Note

Statuettes made of jet, a solid organic material derived from ancient decayed wood, were carved for devotional use or as chess pieces in Western Europe from the Medieval era onward. Although jet was largely imported to Europe from Western Islamic lands, it is found in Spain and England. The present statuette is a Spanish 16th century depiction of St. James, the patron saint of Spain.
