Catalogue Note

Irish artist Rupert Barber (1719-1772) was the son of poet Mary Barter, a friend and protegée of Swift, who called her "The Best Poetess in Both Kingdoms."  Swift's support for her was key for her career and the strong subscription list for her 1734 volume of poetry.  Her son's artistic development was helped by another of Swift's circle, Mrs. Delany, who gave him a house on her property at Delville, near Dublin.

A pastel version of this portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
