Condition

slight abrasions at top (part of old suspension hole?) and 4:00, date shaved on extreme left, may have been trimmed to fit into present frame, otherwise good, nice quality

Catalogue Note

Thomas Flatman (1635-1688) was a poet and miniature painter.  He was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1668.

A similar self-portrait by Flatman, signed and dated 1673, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see Graham Reynolds, "A miniature self-portrait by Thomas Flatman, Limner and Poet," Burlington Magazine, March 1947.  A large-scale self-portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery.
