8vo (7 x 4 3/8 in.; 176 x 110 mm). Printer's device on title page, wooden initials; contemporary manuscript notes in English on first and final blank, uniformly browned. Eighteenth-century English straigth-grained green morocco [probably by Roger Payne], blind-tooled border and elaborated gilt frame.

Eleanor Charlotte Butler and Sarah Ponsonby lived together in Wales after running away from their families to avoid unwanted marriages. They became famous and many famous people came to visit them, mostly writers such as William Wordsworth, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott. The ladies lived together for over fifty years.
