Catalogue Note

Marie de' Medici and Henri IV were married in 1600, in recognition of the support Marie's uncle Grand Duke Ferdinand had given Henri in his bid for the French throne. Although Henri converted to Catholicism to gain the throne, he was assassinated by a Catholic fanatic on 14 May 1610. Marie became regent to their eight-year-old son Louis XIII but she was sent into exile in 1617.

Cosimo expresses his great grief at the dreadful and most unhappy death of the most valorous king, sending with all speed his secretary Andrea Cioli, and offering all the assistance and support of both himself and the house of Medici ("di tutta questa sua Casa").
