- Fine early seventeenth-century Italian manuscript containing drawings of horses with descriptions of the various breeds and national types
- ink, paper, morocco
executed in pen & ink, with pink, green, grey and yellow washes, with captions and descriptions of each national breed in brown ink, together with additional sketches of horses, figures, stables, etc., in pencil, comprising nineteen leaves:
f.1) "AFRICANO. Velocissmo et è macchiato, porta la testa troppo dritta meglio il maresco"
f.2) "TURCO. Selvatico, mangia puoco, è buono al Corso," with extensive additional annotations

Catalogue Note
This is a very attractive set of Italian drawings, probably earlier than (but similar in style to) those engraved in Antoine de Pluvinal's Maneige royal (Paris 1623). No Italian edition of Pluvinal was published and these drawings seem in any case to date from not long after 1600. The artist's captions concern the merits of the various national breeds of horses, more reminiscent of Annania Zen's later Il cavallo di razza (1658), which, however, is only illustrated with woodcuts.
