4to (9 1/2 x 7 in.; 146 x 178 mm). Illuminated title on thick paper with gold roll-tooled scrollwork border and blind acorn stamps; some marginal soiling, leaf D2 catchword cut out, occasional spots. Original black morocco with inlaid citron morocco central medallion and red morocco cornerpieces elaborately gilt stamped with flowers, acorns, scrollwork and urns, all surrounded by a roll-tooled border, spine gilt-stamped in compartments, edges gilt, commissioned by the author, in a green half-morocco slip-case; extremities rubbed.

Catalogue Note
A fine example of a Settle presentation binding. Elkanah Settle (1648-1724), after an indifferent literary career, became City Poet of London, whose duty was to prepare annual pageants for the Lord Mayor's show. When not required, it became his custom to offer a special poem to some important personage in the hope of reward, all richly bound as is the present example, dedicated to the financier Sir Charles Duncombe (d. 1711).
