Six volumes, 4to (11 x 8 1/2 in.; 278 x 220 mm). Half-titles in volumes 2-6; lacking errata leaves; Volume 1 in second edition, dated 1789; engraved frontispiece portrait of Gibbon after Joshua Reynolds dated 1780 in volume 1 ( repeated in volume 2), two folding maps of the Western and Eastern Empire in volume 1 (map of the Western Empire repeated in volume 6), map of the parts of Europe and Asia adjacent to Constantinople in volume 2. Title of volume 2 repaired, some foxing and spotting. Late eighteenth-century red morocco binding, large gilt floral border on panels, spines with gilt urn in compartments; spines slightly faded.
