Catalogue Note
Third or fourth edition of the first English language translation of De casibus illustrium virorum, with leaf Gg4 the rare title-page for the projected but unpublished Mirror for Magistrates, and the Queen's patent to Wayland on the verso. Pforzheimer details at length the speculations about this suppressed/aborted Wayland project. STC accepts this as the title for the true first edition of Mirrour for Magistrates, suppressed for religious and political reasons in Mary's reign and published in abridged form in 1559.
