Two volumes 8vo (9 1/4 x 5 1/2 in.; 234 x 143 mm). Two engraved frontispieces, titles with vignettes and twelve plates after Stothard by Medland, portrait of the author prior to Life of Defoe; spotting and foxing, plates offsetting. Early nineteenth-century English binding, red morocco, gilt floral, Greek and serrated roll-stamps on panels, Thomas Hutton gilt arms and special decorative tools (ship) on spine, title and volume number labels in green morocco; spine very lightly faded.
