First edition, first state of the title, with the motto with the reading "Pantiluis." The play is the story of a rake frightened into respectability by his friends behaving as if he were dead. In its tragicomic construction and the essential fantasy of its ending, it resembles such late Shakespearean plays as The Winter’s Tale.
