Folio (17 1/2 x 11 in.; 443 x 280 mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved arms, initial imprimatur leaf, 29 (of 30) engraved plates, all but one double-page, engraved in-text illustrations, head- and tailpieces and initials; portraits of royal couple, by White, added on first blanks, lacks the fireworks plate, rare and light foxing, dampstaining on the church interiors plates, marginal tears. Contemporary calf, gilt ornamental frame on panels; rebacked.

If the illustrated fetes books were mainly published to show foreign allies and enemies the power of a monarch, Sanford's Coronation was produced for internal consumption. Two years after his ascension to the throne, Britain's first Catholic monarch had become unpopular with Parliament and the public alike. The publication is an attempt to restore James' reputation and solidify his threatened sovereignty.
