Catalogue Note

Translated by Archbishop Matthew Parker, whose name appears in an acrostic before Psalm 119, with four-part musical settings by Thomas Tallis. The text of the Psalms is preceded by prose texts by saints Basil, Chrysostom, and Athanasius, extolling the Psalms and their reading and singing. Each Psalm is preceded by an argument, printed in italic, and there are also occasional collects. Some Psalms appear in various versions in different meters (e.g. Psalm 36).

The "eyght tunes" are printed at the end, including the musical setting of the famous Tallis theme used by Ralph Vaughan Williams for his Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis.
