Catalogue Note
First edition; rare. After a thirty-year career in the army, Rich became a prolific author, but all of his more than twenty publications are now scarce. Rich's second book, Allarme to England sought to rally support, moral and financial, for England's soldiers. With Gascoigne and Churchyard, who contributed a commendatory poem to this work, Rich was one of the three most popular soldier-authors of the Elizabethan era. Sidney Lee, writing in DNB, dismissed Rich's verse as "contemptible," but acknowledged the effective "masculine and sinewy" literary feeling of his prose. Allarme to England, like most of Rich's books, has the author's motto printed on the title-page: "Malui me vivitem esse quam vocari" (I would rather be rich than be called so).
